"Our imagination so powerfully magnifies time--by continual reflection upon it--and so diminishes eternity--for want of reflection--we make a nothing of eternity and an eternity of nothing."
Blaise Pascal(1623-1662)
Do you know for sure that if you died tonight you'd be with God in Heaven?
If God were to ask you, "Why should I let you into My Heaven?" what would you say?
The GOOD NEWS is that God has given us enough information TODAY to settle the essential question of eternal destination.
“We urge you not to let God’s kindness be wasted on you. God says, ‘At the right time I heard you. On the day of salvation I helped you.’ Listen, now is God’s acceptable time! Now is the day of salvation!”
(2 Corinthians 6:1-2)
"Just as it is destined that each person dies only once and after that comes judgment, so also Christ died only once as a sacrifice to take away the sins of many people. He will come again, but not to deal with our sins again. This time He will bring salvation to all those who are eagerly waiting for Him." (Hebrews 9:27-28)
"For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life. God did not send His Son into the world to condemn it, but to save it. There is no judgment awaiting those who trust Him. But those who do not trust Him have already been judged for not believing in the only Son of God." (John 3:16-18)
Answer the Question of Where You'll Spend Eternity
The Bible says, "...the GIFT of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." (Romans 6:23b) Because eternal life is a genuine gift, it cannot be earned or deserved. No amount of personal effort, good works, or religious deeds can earn a place in Heaven for you. "God saves you by GRACE when you believe, and you can't take credit for it; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the things we have done, so none of us can boast about it." (Ephesians 2:8-9)
Why is it that no one can earn his or her way to Heaven? The Bible says that human beings are sinners. "For all have sinned; all fall short of God's glorious standard." (Romans 3:23) Sin is doing the wrong things that violate God's law such as lying, cheating, and stealing (Deuteronomy 5:6-21), as well as not doing the right things that His law demands such as caring for widows and orphans and controlling our speech. (James 1:26-27) We'll all admit to minor imperfections, but if a person wanted to be good enough to be accepted by God on his or her own merit, just how good would they have to be? "Be perfect, just as your Father in Heaven is perfect." (Matthew 5:48) because, "The person who keeps all of God's laws except one is as guilty as the person who has broken them all." (James 2:10) With such a high standard, it is clear that no one can save himself!
God knows we are helpless to stand before Him in our sinful state, but He is merciful. He doesn't want to punish us. "God is love," the Bible says, (I John 4:8) and He says, "I have loved you with an everlasting love." (Jeremiah 31:3) God's nature is loving, according to these and many other Scriptures. But God's nature is also just; therefore, He must punish sin. "The wages of sin is death..." (Romans 6:23a) "I, the Lord, will punish the world for its evil and the wicked for their sin." (Isaiah 13:11) These contrasting characteristics in God's nature--love and justice--pose a dilemma. However, God solved this apparent problem for us in the person of Jesus Christ.
"In the beginning the Word (God the Son, Jesus) already existed. He was with God (the Father) and He was God." (John 1:1) "So the Word (Jesus) became human and lived here on earth among us..." (John 1:14) The Lord Jesus Christ was completely God and completely human. Because of this, He was in the unique position to take the penalty for the sins of human beings so they might not have to suffer the eternal consequences of judgment. He died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins and rose from the grave to prove that He had secured a place for us in Heaven. "All of us have strayed away like sheep. We have left God's paths to follow our own. Yet the Lord laid on Him the guilt and sins of us all." (Isaiah 53:6)
If merely knowing these things were enough, Satan himself would be in Heaven. "Even the demons believe this and tremble in terror!" (James 2:19) Intellectual assent to a set of facts isn't the key. For example, you can believe that the institution of marriage exists; you can believe that you'd like to be married someday to the person of your dreams; you can believe that you've met that person--and you can still be single for the rest of you life IF you don't actually commit yourself to that person in marriage! The kind of belief or "faith" that saves a person involves that sort of commitment. It means that you transfer your trust from what you are doing to earn favor with God to what the Lord Jesus Christ has done for you by His death and resurrection. He has paid the penalty for your sin, "So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus." (Romans 8:1) Please put your trust in Him today and rest assured of your place in Heaven based on His finished work.
The Lord Jesus Christ made exclusive claims. "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father but by Me." (John 14:6) "I assure you, anyone who believes in Me already has eternal life." (John 6:47)
"'What must I do to be saved?'...'Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved, along with your entire household." (Acts 16:30-31) "There is salvation in no one else! There is no other name in all of Heaven for people to call on to save them." (Acts 4:12) "I write this to you who believe in the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal life." (I John 5:13)
